Yes you can know if the other person chatting with you had read the message or not.

Select the message you want to know about the status..
And tap information (“i”).

Here you can see the status of the message whether it’s seen or not.

As you can see, this is that simple. That’s why many say WhatsApp isn’t safe in terms of “privacy”.
